The District’s Opioid and Fentanyl Crisis
The opioid crisis is all but synonymous with the plight of the rural, white working class. But it is changing, due to the increasing presence of fentanyl in the heroin supply in cities such as Washington, D.C. From 2015 to 2016, the District’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner reported a 100 percent increase in fatal narcotic overdoses. In age-adjusted per capita deaths, that puts the District on a level with Ohio, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. Only West Virginia faces a higher rate of overdose mortality.

City Palooza takes the pulse of innovative practices used to solve intractable urban problems and broadcasting them far and wide. Conceived by Federal City Council’s Anthony Williams, the new website is a go-to place for cities to learn about novel solutions to thorny issues. Learn about how the NYC Mayor’s Office of the CTO is engaging with industry by offering urban space to do R&D in partnership with community and government agencies.
