Excellent Schools for All Students
For more than 20 years, the FC2’s trustees have served as trusted partners for education improvement, working closely with local and federal stakeholders to ensure all students, regardless of where they live, are graduating from high school prepared for college, career and life.
A high-quality school facility supports student learning, student and staff health, and a school’s financial health. High-quality school facilities have adequate space for kids to learn, play, and engage in extracurricular activities. DCPS and many large charter school networks have the ability to devote significant resources to facilities projects. However, there are 70 charter organizations in the District and all but a handful are single-site operators. Many individual schools access a limited pool of buildings, seek an improved facility, or try to grow but cannot find the space. This is why the Federal City Council established our Education Facilities Center in 2021 – to ensure that all students have access to high-quality school facilities and that high-performing public charter schools can grow. We work on a few key initiatives.
- We create connections and partnerships between schools and the real estate development community on mixed-use projects.
- We seek opportunities for public charter schools, DCPS, and other government agencies to co-locate and share space.
- We advocate for the government’s support on facility policy, school funding, and specific capital projects.
- We help public charter schools access public and private buildings for school use.
